The Importance of Building Your Personal Brand

October 21st, 2008 by Jeremy Enke

Regardless of if you work as an accountant, an actor, an athlete, an engineer, a manager, or yes even an affiliate; there is one thing that you can never go wrong doing.  That is building your own personal brand.

Way before I even knew what internet marketing was I worked in sales for a few different Fortune 500 companies.  Within these companies, I was able to work my way up into various leadership roles on the sales teams and within the organizations.  Much of this was because of my performance, but more so because I was able to establish my own personal brand as being a person that others could relate to, and that had passion for the work I was doing.

Once you have successfully built your own brand, you will find that many more doors open up for you.  Before you can begin establishing your own personal brand however, you have to have a clear vision of what your brand will represent.  If you consider yourself an expert in something, then build your personal brand around that.  Don’t be afraid to let the world know that this is who you are, what you represent, and why you are an expert in that field.  Regardless of what field or industry you work in, if you build your brand and establish yourself as an expert, you WILL see more doors opening up.

I may sound like a broken record, but I can’t emphasize how important it is to surround yourself with other successful people.  Not only will it make you smarter, but a lot can be said about the people ultra successful individuals associate themselves with.  Part of building your own personal brand is by earning the respect of fellow experts in your industry.

One of the most important aspects of building any brand is also to be consistent.  It takes some time before your brand will be firmly established in the minds of your audience, customers, or business associates.  There are several books out there about “how to” build your personal brand.  In closing though, the power of building your personal brand should not be overestimated.

With all this talk about branding, I do feel obligated to post a picture that my good friend Greg Powell emailed over to me the other day.  It looks like I have achieved the pinnacle in building MY personal brand.  :)

Ever since the party riches days you have done a great job at this Jeremy. Great article, that picture is priceless also.

Your personal brand is similar to starbucks… It’s nothing special but I always come back because it’s the cool thing to do ;-)

Hahaha, Thanks Holloway. Now if I could just figure out a way to charge you $4.00 every time you come here. Maybe I’ll offer a Venti membership or something.

Good stuff Enke!

Nice work man! You definitely are a prime example of personal branding and building upon your successes (and failures). It’s been fun seeing all the things you’ve developed and done. I’m sure we’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg.

Yeah nice post Jeremy. In the online world trust and respect for others is paramount. Building yourself as a brand is definitely a way to gain this.

Building a brand around a business is important, but you also have to build a brand around who you are. Nothing is more important.

I suppose an “About Me” page is where you would expect to read a third person professional write up on myself. Hmmm…. well that’s not really my style, so I’ll just go ahead and tell you “about me” in my own words. Read more...
