The Biggest Risk Of All Is Never Taking A Risk.

    Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

This will be the first “Guest Post” on this blog, and I’m happy to say it has been written by my Dad. Personally I have always been a risk taker throughout my life. Some times taking risks has worked for me, and other times it has turned out be a miserable failure. Overall though I am confident that had I never taken the risks I have over the past few years, I would not be where I am at today.

This is a great article from someone who understands risk way more than I ever will.

The Biggest Risk Of All Is Never Taking A Risk

    By Doug Enke

Risk TakingI’m not a Rocket Scientist (but some times I play one at work.) To be honest, I don’t know if it’s a blessing or a curse to work in the Aerospace industry; it’s pretty neat stuff for a “techie” like me, but on the down side I do have to put up with the white collar bureaucratic establishment types every day.

Jeremy and I often talk about how different our career choices have been. While at first glace it might appear that there’s not much in common between working in Aerospace and working in Poker Affiliate Marketing, there is at least one valuable lesson that I have learned in my Aerospace career that I believe can help you achieve success in your chosen field .

For the last several years of my career I have been a Risk Manager at Hamilton Sundstrand for several NASA programs. So, what does a Risk Manager do? Well simply put, it is about looking at the probability of an undesirable event happening, and assessing what the impact of that event would be if it were to occur. (Sounds a lot like what poker players do with every hand).

The real benefit of risk management though isn’t in merely identifying risks, it’s about being able to make “risk informed” decisions. Risk management is about identifying risks first and then devising mitigation plans and or contingency plans to reduce the potential damage that the risks may cause if they happen. But never let risk management be confused with not taking a risk. If NASA did not take risks we would still be on the ground, instead we are charting a course to send men to Mars in the next decade.

To succeed as an astronaut or as a business person in new uncharted territory (like Affiliate Marketing) requires a willingness to take on risk. To insist on no risk, or minimum risk, or even achieving a perfect understanding of the risk crushes any hope of success. My point then is not to avoid risk, rather to use due diligence in assessing the risks at hand and then making appropriate decisions based on your own knowledge and understanding.

As you face life’s inevitable tough decisions in the days ahead (be they business or personal), consider this. On February 1, 2003 the United States suffered a great loss when the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated over Texas during re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere, with the loss of all seven crew. One of the Columbia crew members was Laurel Clark. Several years before her unfortunate fate she wrote the following poem in a letter to a college friend. I share this with you in hopes that it will inspire you as it continues to me.

To laugh is to risk appearing the fool.

To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.

To reach out for another is to risk involvement.

To expose feelings is to risk exposing our true self.

To place your ideas, your dreams, before the crowd is to risk loss.

To love is to risk not being loved in return.

To live is to risk dying.

To hope is to risk despair.

To try at all is to risk failure.

    But to risk we must,

Because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.

The man, the woman, who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing.

Poker Affiliate Programs - This Is How NOT To Send Spam

    Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

Affiliate Marketing For DummiesLike every other poker affiliate, my inbox gets filled with spam emails every day. Likewise I get several emails from new poker affiliate programs soliciting my business. Normally the spam emails are the same type of stuff, for example, “While searching your site…..blah, blah, blah”.

Today however I got a spam email from CelestialPoker.com, and I am literally speechless. I am fairly confident my 4 year old daughter could write a better email. The sad thing is that there is probably some wealthy person in New Zealand that decided to invest a few hundred thousand into an online poker room.

Reading over this email, and then all the grammar and spelling mistakes on the actual site, I am giving this site a 0.000000000001% chance of ever becoming profitable.

Monday Morning Motivational Message - Finding Purpose In Everything You Do

    Monday, December 17th, 2007

Welcome to another edition of the Monday Morning Motivational message. Today I am going to write about something that I have great belief in. The topic of the day is “purpose”. The dictionary describes purpose as something set up as an object or end to be attained. Whether it is in business or general life, you have to have purpose in order have long term direction.

Working in the online gambling industry can make finding your life’s purpose somewhat difficult. I mean, it’s not like we’re all teachers, doctors, or nurse’s here. At the same time though, we are also not drug dealers, child molesters, or porn peddlers. We are simply internet marketers and entrepreneurs whom make an income marketing within the online gaming industry. I am enjoying writing this post because it has given me the opportunity to re-examine my purpose, where I have been, where I am at, and where I am going.

    Jeremy’s Purpose:

    1. Family & Personal - Every day I walk on this earth, I want to be able to say that I’m best father and husband I canKaren, Sydney, Marissa be. Although my daughters are still young, I want them to always grow up in a great home. I want them to feel loved and realize that they too can do anything in the world they put their mind to. I want my wife to always trust me and realize that EVERYTHING I do is for her and our children.

After working in in Fire/EMS for almost 10 years, I realized that life can be pretty damn short. Trust me, there’s no guaruntees you’re not gonna get fuct with an “early checkout”. With that, enjoy the things in this world that REALLY count. To me this is my family, and nothing will ever come before them.

I didn’t have this purpose before kids, however I guess it would have been difficult as you don’t realize what an impact and life changing experience being a parent is. If I could sum up my purpose into one sentence it would be this; To be a great husband and father while providing the best life in the world for my family.

    2. Business & Career - This is one of the more difficult things to find purpose in. Once again, we work in online gaming. However over the past few years I have been able to narrow down my purpose (although not completely there yet). Ever since PartyRiches, I have been blessed and fortunate to hold a unique position in the industry. I feel my purpose in business is to help others succeed and realize their own potential. Likewise I want to make the overall poker affiliate industry a better place month after month for everyone.

Of course I am driven by making money, and lots of it. But this is so I can do all the things I want to do above in #1. Having a purpose of solely making money could actually lead to a pretty miserable life.

In summary, I think it’s impossible to achieve great success unless you have a general idea what your purpose in life and business is. I challenge everyone to think about what their purpose in life is. Surely it’s not collecting CPA’s or MGR for sending players to poker sites each month.

Once you have determined your life’s purpose, I believe your purpose in business will fall into place much easier.

Here is a great blog post about How To Discover Your Life’s Purpose.

When Proposition Betting Goes Bad - I Hate You Ron Turner

    Friday, December 14th, 2007

Hair ClippersI often wonder what it feels like to be a prisoner on death row with a few months left to go. Although I am not days away from being executed, I am a couple months away from losing my hair. Some of you may remember before the NFL season started that I made a bet with my neighbor. The bet was that the Chicago Bears would finish this season with a better record than the Packers.

At the time this seemed like a great prop. After all, the Packers sucked last year, and the Bears almost won the Superbowl. Plus it would have been great seeing my neighbor fly a gay flag in his front yard for a seven days. Well, here we are after week 15 and my loss is imminent. Initially I was just going to get it over with and shave my head this weekend. After further review however I am going to wait until Superbowl Sunday. What a great way to end a dismal season eh…..<——-(not Canadian)

I blame losing this bet solely on the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Ron Turner. I don’t even think he could coach the local community college to a winning season, let alone an NFL team. His play selections are horrible. Mr. Turner, if for some reason you ever come across this post while searching your name in google, please click here immediately. Although considering my bet, I will be waiting for you when you get there.

My wife was not to thrilled about the prospect of me showing up at Christmas gatherings this year looking like a skin head. And actually now that I think about it, I am probably going to be speaking at CAP Euro, so I mine as well wait.

Note to self, no more proposition betting pre-season while intoxicated. Have a great weekend!

And prepare for a potential BIG ANNOUNCEMENT on this blog next week………….Oh the suspense.

Never Bet On The Chicago Bears
